A short how to do it yourself video about worm composting in an urban environment. This video explains & shows you how to build your own worm composting bin system.
Glad to know that people find this useful! I'll try the wine for flies next time, although I hesitate to give up an excuse to pop open a beer. Also, it's true that microwaving or freezing your scraps kills any larvae within them, but make sure not to temperature shock your worms. Regarding where you put your bin, just make sure that it's a temperate place, away from drafts; a damp place might help reduce the need to water the bin. My semi-heated basement works great.
I followed most of the advice you gave here. I also found a window screen that had a broken frame, removed it (pulled on the rubber seal that keeps the screen in place, & it came right out!), washed it, & folded & stapled it so it's the size of the inner bottom of my bottom working bin. I did this to keep the worms from crawling into the lower bin. On the fruit flies, it works well to add a drop of dish soap to the bait (surface tension breaks, they fall in) & no bag needed :}
Started my worm farm 2 months ago. Followed your video. Thanks. In the evening my wife has a glass of wine at dinner. We have the vermiculture in the house because of the heat here in AZ. Wife falls to sleep and I put the left over wine in fridge. Lately it has fruit flies in it. I decided to try a wine fruit fly trap along w/ the beer fruit fly trap. Believe me! The flies like wine much better. Try it.
Fruit Fly Trap. Beer vs. Wine. I made two traps and put beer in one and wine in the other. The wine attracted the flies about a 1000 to 1 more than beer. Having my worm bin in the house because of the heat of summer in Arizona created a big problem w/ fruit flies. At night I'll leave the lid cracked and sneak up on it in the morning and close it, then take it outside and let out the trapped flies. Has reduced the fruit fly problem in the house tremendously.
I love that you say Fabulous! Great video. Thanks so much for the tip on fruit fly traps. I read you can also microwave the scraps briefly to kill the eggs.
One of the best worm composting videos. You did a great job and the music was cool.
