Here is Clyde Davenport playing "Sally Johnson", which is a tune he learned from Leonard Rutherford. Clyde is accompanied by Bobby Fulcher in this live performance at the Appalshop's "Seedtime on the Cumberland" festival in June of 1993. Appalshop is located in Whitesburg, Kentucky.

  • thanks, don. all of your posts from this concert are worth having.

to answer an earlier question, "sally johnson" and "katy hill" are close to being the same tune.

"sally anne johnson" is not related, or similar. look at the fiddlers companion site, also the henry reed collection for particulars. fine tune, as well.

  • This is one of the most nicely articulated versions of this tune that I've heard. I love the way that Clyde barely moves when he plays; this isn't an easy tune to play, but, like all the great fiddlers, he just makes it look so effortless. I would love to see some more footage from this concert...

  • yes it's the same tune.i never heard anybody call it "sally ann johnson" except clark kessinger, most fiddlers just call it "sally johnson" . alot of fiddlers play some of the same tunes, just different versions, or names of them. it usually depends what part of the country they are from

  • This tune reminds me a lot of the tune the Clark Kessinger play called Sally Ann Johnson. But its not the same tune is it? Someone clarify the linkage here?

  • Stuart has one of the best sounding violins I've heard though and its a cheap copy. So, go figure. Pay $50 in a pawn shop and you may be buying a great fiddle LOL.

  • I always liked the way Alison's box sounded. I like Aubrey's too but its a little bright for me. It has always sounded great in the studio though. Allot of it has to do with that he's such a great player. If I remember correctly, Buddy's violins always sounded good. Very classical and even I just hated the color of that yellow one he had/has but it sounded great.

  • Yeah Bobby's fiddle sounded good to me.....But he really bragged it up a lot.....Mine is a Hand built by William Bannister in Columbus Indiana. He also built one for Aubrey Haynie and Kruass. I like it but it was not as loud as Bobby's. It has a really great low end however......I am going to see Bobby tonight perform with Buddy Spicher..They are doing a fiddle set together...Should be interesting..

Can't blame you for not letting just anyone play that puppy!!!

  • Well, I guess there are some out their that will let you do that. I was never impressed with Bobby's fiddle. I tried one out that he had sold to a well known fiddler and sat it down after about 3 long notes. I have a Gand & Bernadel; a $45,000 violin. I better know you very well and you better be able to play really well for me to just hand over to you.

  • Bobby Hicks just handed his right over to me the first time I met him. Let me try it out with several different sticks also this was the Golden Boy fiddle he used on all the Skaggs hits and Album Band Stuff.....

  • Now that makes sense. I didn't know he ran a fiddle business.
