Taken from my book "African Bell Ritual" this video demonstrates the 12/8 standard African bell pattern with a foot shaker keeping the 4-beat. The drums explore cross rhythms in 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 with all possible rotations of each. This study exemplifies how the bell can be felt in different pulses while retaining its elegance and potency. The resulting grooves are ideal for a variety of composed or improvised settings. Visit rhombuspublishing.com to view my entire library of 8 books, CDs, and articl

  • @leeyatding tape...

  • Thank you for this beautiful demonstration of the genius of African music.

  • how to attach the shaker on your feet? thx

  • my mistake. I watched again & realize i'd lost the one. Thanks for the lesson

  • Great lesson but im a bit confused about the agogo pattern as he played it on the beat at the very start of the lesson & then a different rhythm off the beat when he played the drums. Can anyone clear this up for me please.

  • Ace!

  • awesome video

  • Cool.

  • It's altogether a song, and you singing. Oh my goodness, you reach '8' that's VERy good man - I really will refer kit drummers to you - you are so non-mechanical about playing it despite the technicality of your breakdowns

  • ZENSIBLE:

this is a bembé pattern. It`s just right on 12/8, cause is the african clave lenght, it can be divided in two bars of 6/8 if you preffer. also can be written in 4/4 all in triplets.

What he is doing on feet is pulse in dotted cuarter notes...you can spell this way ("y" are silences, "x." is feet: doted quarter note)

    12/8: 1y3 y 23 y2y 1y3 x. x. x. x.
