M&A Success: Beating the Odds

As part of the Accenture Management Consulting podcast series, Tom Herd, North America lead for mergers and acquisitions within Accenture's Strategy practice argues that the most challenging phase of a merger or acquisition is the merger integration phase. According to Herd, studies show that three-quarters of mergers/acquisitions actually destroy value, so it is vital to learn from that minority of companies that consistently get mergers right. To do this is not rocket science, but it does require getting the basics right:
1)Focus on the big decisions versus focus on minutia.
2)Set clear goals for integration.
3)Get governance correct.
4)Attach the right resources to the integration effort.
