I & my partner met Fred for the first time through a mutual friend in Barcelona in a café off the Rambla in 2009.He was a brilliant academic who with some exceptions, political views i shared. As important, he was a kind & generous man.He was ill but still made time to see me & was great company & extremely helpful. The day was marvelous & memorable in only the way a Barcelona summers day can be in the company of Fred Halliday. It's such a great tragedy & los
