In Septmber 2009, Peter Hall climbed the world's tallest active volcano to raise much-needed funds for The Alzheimer's Society. The challenge, which involved climbing four peaks in two weeks, culminated in a gruelling 19,637ft climb with ice axes and crampons up steep glaciers to the summit of Cotopaxi in Ecuador.
Alzheimer's Society raised more than 2m pounds in 2008 thanks to 16,000 people taking part in charity events - an average of just 125 pounds per person. When compared to the approximately 10m pounds left as legacies each year to animal welfare organisations, it is clearly an under-supported charity in the UK.
