Somali Pirates Hijack Saudi Oil Tanker

WONG:
More trouble on the open seas. Somali pirates hijacked another vessel last Sunday far off east Africa. The captured Saudi supertanker Sirius Star is the largest vessel seized to date, with an oil cargo worth over $100 million U.S. dollars.

STORY:
The Saudi Aramco-owned Sirius Star was heading for the United States via the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa when it was seized by pirates. The hijacking took place 450 nautical miles southeast of Mombasa, Kenya, in an area far beyond the Gulf of Aden where most of the attacks on vessels have taken place in recent years.

The U.S. Fifth Fleet said the Sirius Star was being taken to the pirate haven of Eyl, in northern Somalia.

The Liberian-flagged vessel held as much as two million barrels of oil -- more than one quarter of Saudi Arabia's daily exports.

The hijacking is certain to add pressure for international maritime policing to end the growing threat posed by pirates from Somalia to one of the world's busiest shipping routes.
