  • Actually the steamer usually only has a diesel as a helper going through the hills in order to save wear and tear on the steam engine. The diesel gives a little bit of grunt on the uphill and most importantly it provides dynamic braking on the other side. Also the train almost always has a power car to supply the juice to the rest of the train. Yes, the companies are paranoid but they don't put a diesel in the train as much as you think. Nice vid by the way.

  • @mongo5888 Heay, at least it wasnt no GE, but an old F45 warrior!

  • @gwaithwyr yah I thought it was something like that I remember seeing pictures of one while in Russia very fascinating they sure had somenice looking steam locomotives the largest I have rode the cab of was a P36 4-8-4

  • The Soviet 14-coupled was a 4-14-4 and was intended for coal trains coming north out of the Don coalfield. The rigid wheelbase proved just too long.

  • wow! that was great, it nice to see large steam locomotives doing some good speeds, and they had an almost complete set of stainless steel passenger cars!!! i loved it..we dont have anything like this over in the north east.....someday!!

  • @PereMarquette1223 I mistyped yet a second time thanks for correcting my mistake on comment the first time and I ment the SP 4-10-2 the second time I typed in the comment

  • @PereMarquette1223 yah thats right thanks for correcting me I I forgot about SPs 4-12-2s

  • @gaycowboy31 The UP had 3-cylinder 4-12-2's, but they did have 2-10-2's (the smallest 3 cylinder engines were 4-10-2's, but SP owned them and not UP).

  • @decline2state yah but the 4-8-4 is not the largest non articulated loco that honor belonged to the large UPRR 2-10-2 3 Cylinder locomotives (sorry if I mispelled cylender wrong) and the Russians actully built a 2-14-2 I believe it was for Siberian service

  • @mongo5888 not so much to save on it mechanically as to save on water! Mechanically it's fine, but water stops just aren't close enough together.

  • @ALS2001 Amen to that! :)
