Officials in Chicopee Massachusetts gathered to watch the start of the demolition project. Six of the 23 buildings on the 72 acre property next to the Chicopee River should be torn down by spring. There is no timetable for the remaining buildings to come down. The entire clean up of the site could cost $20 million making it one of the biggest "brownfield" projects in Western Massachusetts. Chicopee officials will begin working next month on a strategic plan to redevelop the property. Mayor Michael Bissonnette envisions a mixed use of residential and commercial development.
