How did you get the Lancer to upgrade? Do you just defeat lots of enemies?

Good to see Ratchet didn't desert his wrench but thanks to the incredibly improved weapon system of this game over Ratchet & Clank which the wrench was his primary weapon you tend to forget its there until you're either out of ammo or forced into melee.
