Don't learn how to belay from this video, or any video. Get a competent friend or instructor to show you.

Then show them this video and they'll cringe and tell you whats wrong with it. (It may take a while!)

This belay technique is perfectly safe when done correctly. It is featured in John Long's work "How to Rock Climb" and is AMGA certified. The problem is, while the technique is correct, he is executing it wrong. He has left his climber unsafe by not locking off the belay to his hip when not taking in slack, he is not watching his climber, and he is not in a proper belay stance.

Agreed, but most people dont know what a bight of rope, so, loop is the closest synonym that most people will understand. We agree tho, it's too bad that this video teaches improper nonsense. It needs to be erased forever. Anyone who follows this advice, falls and sues- can sue the video goy, the expertvillage, and possibly youtube. I hope this happens but the injury is minor and not death. Hang on- I'll grab a synonym dictionary and post the results... 1-2

Everybody seems to have already pointed out most of the faults with this video. But this guy just described a bight of rope as being a loop. What? Two completely different things and he uses one to describe the other.
