We checked out Deerhoof play at the Hollywood Bowl on July 27 and asked drummer Greg Saunier a whole pile of our most pressing questions.

  • Greg Saunier = totally inspiring!

    What a guy.

  • I hugged Ed after their show in Calgary during the Sled Island festival. I couldn't help it. He's so affable! I also tried to hug Satomi, but she was afraid of me. Perhaps it was the germs, I don't know. Also, she's so small. I felt I could accidentally crush her. Greg and John were elsewhere, so I would have tried to hug them as well. It has long been a desire for me to hug Deerhoof, and now that I have hugged one quarter of Deerhoof it is still a desire for me to hug Deerhoof.

    And you?

  • Greg kinda reminds me of Crispin Glover

  • watching the audience at this gig is hilarious, it's like the opposite of all the other deerhoof shows i've seen... they're paying no attention to the band, whereas at all the other shows, the audience seems to be trying their hardest to communicate with the band by participating as much as possible through the performance...

  • @beetlezumbie Spirit Ditties of no Tone

  • what song was at 1:00-1:18

    SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME!!!

  • Great drummer!

  • you know, he makes a good point about chris's playing style - for better or worse, on runners four his basslines have a distinctly plodding and deliberately messy sound which you don't hear in later recordings.

  • riff at 3.28 is from the chorus of 'spirit ditties of no tone' of the runners four album. ace tune!

  • the riff at 3:28 - what song is this? saw them not so long ago and this riff was mindblowing :)

  • I was there. It was a KCRW (npr station in Santa Monica) show with Deerhoof, Fallou Dieng, and Gnarls Barkley...."international night" or something...strange line up. Went with my grandma, she liked it.
