EAGAN, June 24, 2008 Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty today joined John F. Brock, chairman and chief executive officer, Coca-Cola Enterprises (NYSE: CCE), to announce that the company is undertaking energy conservation and climate change initiatives in the Twin Cities, including the introduction of 10 hybrid electric trucks to their distribution center in Eagan. By August, Coca-Cola Enterprises will have 142 hybrid electric delivery trucks throughout the United States and Canada, giving it the largest heavy-duty hybrid electric delivery fleet in North America. Midwest Coca-Cola Bottling Company is an operating unit of Coca-Cola Enterprises, the worlds largest marketer, distributor and producer of Coca-Cola products.
Coca-Cola Enterprises has long been responsive to the needs of our local communities, and the expansion of our hybrid electric fleet in the Twin Cities demonstrates our commitment to Governor Pawlentys call for local industries to be proactive in the search for alternative fuel sources, said Brock. These efforts, coupled with other energy saving measures here in the Twin Cities and elsewhere, are not only a commitment to the environment, but theyre also good business practices.
Sustainable business practices will save businesses money in the long run, but are especially good for our the environment, which is why Midwest Coca-Cola Bottling Company, a leader in our business community, has made this commitment, said Governor Pawlenty. Although Coca-Cola Enterprises is a global company, there are important local implications to this decision. Midwest Coca-Cola Bottling Company runs trucks though our cities on their distribution routes, and by converting their fleet here, theyre contributing to better air quality in the communities they serve locally like Eagan, St. Paul and Minneapolis.
The 33000 GVW hybrid electric trucks are the largest hybrid electric delivery trucks on the road in North America. The trucks produce 37 percent fewer emissions and use 32 percent less fuel than standard trucks, and reduce noise and emissions when theyre idling or in traffic. CCE conducted an intensive research and design program with their supplier to modify standard hybrid technology to best fit its business. The trucks were specifically developed for the high frequency of stopping and starting in urban areas like the Twin Cities.
The 10 trucks at Midwest Coca-Cola Bottling Company equal the largest CCE hybrid electric fleet of any city in the United States, and represent about 10 percent of the Twin Cities sales centers delivery fleet. Overall, the Twin Cities sales center services 17,000 local customers, delivering more than 18 million cases of product annually.
Midwest Coca-Cola Bottling Company employs approximately 1,500 people in the state of Minnesota, including 1,000 at the Eagan facility. As part of CCEs commitment to Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, Midwest Coca-Cola Bottling Company is implementing other sustainable business practices locally, including the installation of an energy efficient lighting system at its 457,000 sq. ft. Eagan facility. The Company is also home to CCEs first Centralized Recycling Initiative where local sales centers in the upper Midwest use delivery trucks to return recyclable materials to its Eagan facility to be recycled and reused. In 2008, the Company expects to recycle 736 tons of PET, aluminum, and other commodities.
Coca-Cola Enterprises is the worlds largest marketer, distributor, and producer of bottled and canned liquid nonalcoholic refreshment. CCE sells approximately 80 percent of The Coca-Cola Companys North American volume, and is the sole licensed bottler for products of The Coca-Cola Company in Belgium, continental France, Great Britain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Monaco.
