Mormon Destroying Angel Bill Hickman The Hartley Murder. Confession

When Bill Hickman approached JH Beadle to help write his confession he got some unexpected help in confirming his murder of Jesse Hartley. Nettie Smith met Hartley's widow and made a record of it in her book "15 Years Among the Mormons", 1858.. Then in 1871 when Hickman confessed to Beadle he spoke of Hartley. In 1872 Hickman's confession was published. It was still difficult to believe despite decades of such reports of such atrocities. Even Prosecutor RN Baskin could not at first believe the stories told. But he did eventually.... And so should you.

It's evident from letters that Hickman was an amiable fellow. Prob wasn't the smartest thing to pick a fight with him though... I don't think there was premeditated murder, least of all ordered by the church. They were defending the territory from those who had pursued them there. Remember, war is an ugly thing. If they hadn't defended themselves they also wouldn't exist now. Surely you're not against self-defense?

Were it written as given, Brigham Young and Hickman would've gone to prison. Instead, it was written to sell books back east. The taller the tale, the bigger the sales. Again, after seeing the PBS series, I'd guess an Arkansan resisted and that what happened was a complete aberration. If not there'd be countless examples of missing wagon trains, instead of the countless helped by the church. JHBeadles work was that of a dime store novelist with a obvious flare for tall tales. The proof that he was an unreliable witness are no charges were ever filed by a federal gov't who had already rounded up Momons and cataloged them like Jews. The way I see it, the church fled to Utah and anyone who threatened them got a fight. Is that any different than any other church?
