This is THE bass lesson of all time. Jaco is loud, super swinging and funky, playing a LOT, throwing in chords, harmonics, hot counter-melody lines...and never EVER EVER getting in the way or stepping on anything.
It's everything that can possibly be done with a bass in one song, and could ONLY have been pulled off by Jaco. "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up!" He did.

....AND,for what it's worth, I think the bass line between 2:29 and 2:50 is the greatest thing he ever recorded!
I know......it's a daft thing to claim.
