PENSACOLA - A 72-year-old Pensacola man says the three teens who tried to invade his home this weekend should consider themselves lucky.
Jack Crawford says when he fired his gun, he made sure he did not fire a fatal shot.
Channel Three's Bill Pearson tells why Crawford decided to only shoot two of the teens.
Jack Crawford says as soon as he opened his front door Saturday night, one of the three teens slammed his head with a baseball bat.
That's when Crawford pulled his gun out, shooting two of the teens.
Jack Crawford shares a home with his sister.
On Saturday night, Jack was surprised to hear someone knocking on the front door of their home.
Jack Crawford said, "There was three guys out there and one of them hit me with a baseball bat, right off. Opened the door and Wham!"
Even though he was stunned by a blow to his head, Jack pulled out a gun.
Jack Crawford said, " I shot him. Then shot the other one and one was running and I didn't want to shoot him in the back. So, I let him go."
Jack says he knew exactly what he was doing when he fired his gun.
Jack Crawford said, "They're lucky to be alive. That's it. If I wasn't in a good mood, they would have carried them away."
18-year-old Curtis Crenshaw, and 17 year old Nathaniel Nichols suffered gunshot wounds.
Crenshaw, Nichols, and a third teen, Earl Benard, were able to flee the Crawford property.
The two teens who were shot were taken to the hospital where they were treated, then arrested.
Jack Crawford also had to be treated for the baseball hit he suffered on the crown of his head.
Jack Crawford said, "I've got a hard head. Believe me. It wasn't that bad."
Crawford is not in trouble with the law, because of Florida's "Stand your Ground" law.
Jack Crawford said, "It's a good law, the law (enforcement) can not be everywhere to protect everybody, so you have to protect yourself. Period."
Jack hopes people learn a lesson before they decided to try and break into his home.
Jack Crawford said, "They've got to learn, you don't take a baseball bat to a gun fight. They better know it, because next time they'll be carrying them away, if there is a next time.
Bill Pearson/Reporting said, "Jack Crawford hopes other people, especially senior citizens, learn from this case. Crawford says the lesson is to either keep your door closed, or have a gun ready to fight off an intruder. Homeowner Shoots Invaders
