Funky DL "Circles (going round)"

For a Hackney rapper, Funky DL doesn't sound obviously homegrown.

His high-sheen, jazzy stylings owe more to US r'n'b than the rough edges and grimy beats that have become synonymous with East London hip hop.

This latest work is split into different musical 'quarters' (Soul, New Age, Jazz and Authentic) and DL proves an engaging host, rapping in an understated accent and mixing positive messages and goodhumoured confessions on Love, Honesty And Discipline.

Often, it's appealingly old-fashioned: check the sweetly mellow groove of The Bump or Taking Rap Back.

Less successfully, an unclear sample on Nicole (featuring Xantoné Blacq) makes it sound like someone's stuttering the word 'nipple' throughout the romantic groove.

DL's international scope is no bad thing (he's apparently big in Japan), even if he doesn't synch with any current scene -- it's just time he had more adventures close to home.
