NANAIMO - Times are tough, fuel and commodity prices are on the rise and those increases are reflected on grocery store shelves.
Stores are also finding customer loyalty waning, people shop around for the best bang for their buck. It's not uncommon for people to hit two or three grocery stores to get the best deals on any given day.
While commodities are on the rise, the grocery industry is seeing stability in the costs of other products such as dairy and canned goods. That stability is vital for people on tight budgets who are being forced to spend more on other items.
Thrifty Foods opened a new store across town at Brooks Landing in December. The store's manager says there's a lot of competition in Nanaimo, but that holds true across the Country and that's a good thing for consumers.
With more competition in town, grocery stores are looking for ways to provide the best deals and draw the most customers. A competition between grocery stores - where the customers end up winning.
