@mrfester42 I understand that he never said "you aren't allowed." I was making the point to others on here, that they did not smoke or do drugs openly in the studio. That's all.
@mrfester42 Duh! An authority figure ,yes! Make shit up!? Get real. Martin would not have wanted them to smoke at EMI. Read a book. It wasn't just Martin. Dick James, all of them--would not want reefer smoke in their studio. You sound silly.
@1954telecaster Yes, they could have done almost anything they wanted, but they didn't. That's not to say they didn't do crazy stuff but considering how the whole world worshiped them and groveled at their feet, they were amazingly self controlled. If they weren't they couldn't have produced such high quality work for so many years. They were like a team of athletes with the goal of winning an Olympic gold medal every year. Each was the athlete, coach and cheerleader!
@1954telecaster What has always been striking to me about their music was that it was, for the most part, not jaded or cynical. Through their whole body of work together as a group there is a powerful undercurrent of joy. THAT, I believe, is what made the world beat a path to their door and never leave, even to this day. It's that undercurrent of joy in their music that made people fall in love with them as a group and individuals.
@1954telecaster What you learn from reading about them was that they were intensely and uniquely creative. On top of that they were as ambitious as hell and had a powerful work ethic. They were driven and very focused! They retained many of the values of their provincial upbringing by not letting the others in the group get a "big head" which kept them insulated, in a way, from the craziness that comes with fame.
@mrfester42 They were keenly aware of the power they possessed. If they didn't respect Martin, he wouldn't have lasted with them to produce every album of theirs but one. Lennon wouldn't dream of doing drugs of any kind in Martins presence. That would be a great insult and you don't insult those you respect. Hell, he didn't even do heroin in front of the other Beatles.
@1954telecaster Where do idiots like you come up with this shit? If you read anything about the Beatles, you'd realize that they were very provincial in their attitudes about many things. John never snorted coke and heroin "openly" as you say. They all had great respect for Martin and anything like that they kept from him. Their attitude was never "the hell with George Martin". In a very real way and in the best possible sense he was an authority figure to them.
