HAITI-UNIVERSITY DESTRUCTION

Port-au-Prince University collapsed in a strong earthquake that rocked the Haitian capital on Tuesday (January 12), trapping an unknown number of people. The 7.0-magnitude earthquake is believed to have killed hundreds, possibly thousands of people, and toppled buildings and shanties alike.

The epicenter of the quake was only 10 miles (16 km) from Port-au-Prince, which has a population of about 1 million, and aftershocks as powerful as 5.9 rattled the city throughout the night and into Wednesday.

Experts said the quake's epicenter was very shallow at a depth of only 6.2 miles (10 km), which was likely to have magnified the destruction.

Here, at the university, students were still trapped in the rubble, hours after the quake struck.

Groups of students tried to rescue their fellow classmates.

The earthquake is the most powerful to hit Haiti in more than 200 years according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Reuters television footage from the capital, Port-au-Prince, showed scenes of chaos on the streets with people sobbing and appearing dazed amid the rubble.

The presidential palace, the United Nations headquarters and the national cathedral were among buildings suffering serious damage.

As the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti is ill-equipped to respond to such a disaster.

Reports on casualties and damage were slow to get out of Haiti due to communication problems.
