It's 10 pm. Do you know where dad is?

Barry Steinhart and Richard Atkinson debate tagging their father with a nanoscale tracking device to ensure his safety. The Power of Small panel discusses the how nanoscale tracking devices can be used in society and the implications of tracking human whereabouts with new technology.

These people are talking nonsense about technology with only the shallowest understanding of it. Implantable RFID tags use regular microelectronics, not "nanotechnology" by any reasonable definition of the term. And any scheme of using RFID for tracking individual's movements would require reading sensors placed every three feet in the public space, plus a network connecting each sensor and aggregating the data. It is unlikely that any society would ever be insane enought to waste the funds.
