An aspiring super power India also has a dubious distinction of being home to largest numbers of poor, food insecure people in the world. Indian parliament will soon pass a bill which will make food security a fundamental constitutional right of Indian citizens. But unfortunately this right is unlikely to be honored as long as the country relies on the present highly inefficient, corrupt Public Distribution System which leaks away over 50% of grain meant for poor to open market. The country should try out effective ways of achieving this noble goal of food security
Why don’t we just make everything Free? The people of India aren’t starving because the government didn’t do enough for them, but because government got too involve in the food system. It uses taxpayer money to buy rice and wheat at inflated prices and then lets tons of it rot, or corrupt officials sell it on the black market, which further inflates rices. If there wasn’t a PDS system in India, The prices of rice and wheat would fall so that even the poor could afford to buy it.
