I like the cheap tin-foil idea, however, what I find very user-unfriendly and suggested often by others is to caulk the window sash. Ok, we are warmer during the winter, what about the 7 other months of warm temperatures? Removing caulk is not very easy. Your thoughts?

Rope caulk is very easy to remove. It's made to be that way. Don't, don't, don't use a caulking gun. That will definitely seal your window sash for good and all.
