Chempakasseri was a small kingdom consisting of parts of present Alleppey and Quilon districts of Kerala State. The soldiers of this erstwhile kingdom used to perform a rhythmic dance item showing their physical agility and fitness in front of the monarch. Later this was accepted as an item in temple festivals. Kulathilvela performed around the temple pond and Thirumunpil vela performed in front of the deity.'Vela' means work and 'kali' means peformance.
