In her 5-part oral history interview, actress Suzanne Pleshette talks about her early years as an actress in film (The Geisha Boy), television (Playhouse 90, One Step Beyond), and Broadway ("The Miracle Worker"). She discusses her friendship with Alfred Hitchcock that began on the feature film The Birds. She speaks about her television work, including The Bob Newhart Show, in which she played Newhart's wife "Emily Hartley," including her surprise in the series finale of Newhart. She talks about several other appearances on TV including Columbo, Leona Helmsley: The Queen of Mean (in which she played the title role), and 8 Simple Rules and recounted the personalities of many people she worked with throughout her career.

  • I love that Suzanne was conscious of the effect her work would have on others and on society. She was such a cool lady.  Beautiful, intelligent, funny and caring.

    Actually the husband on the show is scripted in a way that portrays him as a big kid, so instead of 3 sons, she is actually raising 4 sons! That is his character and face it, in reality if you act like a child others will treat you as such...

Have loved Suzanne for her work for decades, but this interview proves not only did I know nothing about her, but that who she was as a person makes her wonderful performances pale by comparison. For those who know her only as Bob's beloved and bemused Emily, please rent Hitchcock's The Birds and be stunned by just what a range she was capable of on screen. And in life as well, as this interview documents.
