Rockapella was performing at the community theater in my hometown, and the choir director from my high school asked them to come speak at the school. Unfortunately (slash fortunately for me), it was too expensive to have the entire group come speak. They tried to sing a bunch of songs, but petered out without a bass, so they asked if anyone wanted to come sing "Stand By Me" with them. I volunteered with my friend. I didn't know the lyrics so I sang bass.

I assumer she talked to their manager, and I don't really have any idea about price. They happened to be performing in my area anyway, which I think made it easier.
