Transfered from a VHS taken in 1991 at the NS yard in Asheville, NC. (The same train as in NS-Asheville, NC-1991 II) The yard in Asheville has a small hill and is sometimes used as a "hump" to sort the cars as seen in this video. Some of the quality is lost because of the transfer from VHS to MPG. Enjoy.

You should see that done using hand signals..You would be running along side of the car flapping one arm as a stop signal as you got ready to left the uncoupling bar...

nice vid.
I liked hearing the engine rev up and then stop.
You know what's going on.
"kick"............ That'll do".
Love it.

I don't know about NC, but we call that a "bowl" or a "kicking-yard" out west. Ideally, just a little downhill from the point of the kick, leveling off in the center of the yard, and likewise higher at the opposite end (like a bowl).

I'm totally with you on that one. The North Carolina of back then was so much different than that of today. I went to Asheville for the first time this weekend and I wanted to leave as soon as I set foot there. I don't know how anybody could call Asheville the best city ever. More like, the most boring everybody-in-a-rush city from hell. It could be worse. I live in the Raleigh/Durham area. This place is nothing but a bunch of snobs (and has also changed big time since 1991)
