Tajikistan is one of the poorest republics of the former Soviet Union, with a weak economy that is reflected in the poor health and low standard of living of the population.

Many villages do not have adequate health services or information. Access to television and radio is limited due to geography.

Mercy Corps supports better health and nutrition by training local volunteers as Community Health Promoters. They usually conduct 8 sessions per month on preventive care and healthy behaviors.
