While on safari in Kenya, I was very lucky to be able to witness a live cheetah kill in the Maasai Mara (also known as the Serengeti when in Tanzania). It apparently happens very infrequently that we are able to see this in action. What you don't see on the Discovery Channel is that the stalking took about 15 minutes and the cheetah moves each paw infinitesimally slowly. It also blends so easily into the savannah, even knowing where it was, if you lost sight of it for a moment you had to take note of landmarks to recapture its position. The run and take-down took about 5 seconds. Then the subjugation, suffocation and ex-sanguination took about 5 minutes. Extremely watchful and alert for predators, the cheetah waited about 15 minutes before calling her cubs. They retreated to the underbrush for about an hour, to make sure the coast is clear, before emerging and beginning to eat.
Though the food might be fast, feasting in the Mara requires extreme caution.

Wow- what an intense thing to be able to see in front of your eyes! Sounds like your safari crew camped out for quite some time to take in the whole event - from hunt to feast. Thanks for sharing some of your adventure!
