I have a British cookbook from the very early 19th c., in English obviously. It is fascinating but I don't understand what a lot of the stuff is.

In 1922, Stephen Poplawski invented the blender... This recipe is from 1913, you wouldn't have a blender available ;)

They probablly used a food mill or mesh strained to make the soup smooth :3

Yep :) The original recipe said to squish the whole thing through mesh sieves.

The best tomato soup I ever had was at the Basil Street Hotel in London, England. I got some for my anorexic spouse and he spilled it!
