Delighted to find this video. Started successfully running my Hilux Mk3 on sunflower oil. Have since been offered cooking oil (from deep fat fryer) from a hospital kitchen where they only use the oil once for cooking chips. It's got to be really clean already so I'm looking for simple filtration and water seperation system.
Will probably build smaller modified version of yours.
Nay problems with your vehicle/
thanks for uploading.

Now if you can use a sealed barrel with 2 bungs, you can use one tube going down to the bottom like you do now. And the other bung would be an automatic overflow to your clean barrel. As you pour dirty oil in, clean oil will be forced out.
Mount a bucket over the input tube as your input reservoir, and a valve on the output tube to control the flow rate so it doesn't stir up from going thru too fast.
All the parts have to be sealed for this to work. It's just taking yours to the next level.

you imply that new(used) oil poored into the base of the drum via the pipe cleans faster because it passes up through the sludge in the base of the drum, is that what you mean
This settlement/filtration system still in regular use....I gave up on the system in the last video (cloth filters clogged too quick and it could not deal with water).

Hi boozer692.
The reason for the oil going to the base of the drum is that the clean, thin oil must go upward towards the clean surface and the volume you add is displaced through the filter via the floating take-off...leaving the heavier components (water, hard fat, solids) behind ( I now have a 1" hose to syphon those off when required.....a little at a time).
I place an oil can on the drum rim and pierce it, so the thick fat has minimal disturbance. Slow, but 20L+ per day is easy in summer.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. Does the water siphon (home brew siphon) get clogged up with fat? Do you have to keep cleaning it?

Hamish, the beauty of it is that the syphon self-seals when the water is gone....when more water is there, the little plug of fat just gets sucked up through the pipe and away...no blocking. If there is no water, the little pump just can't pull the fat through.
good luck...
