This is my handbuilt, turbo Miata based Locost on the back straight at MidOhio. The brake pedal mount failed at 130MPH as I was trying to slow for the corner, and I launched the car off the track, through the gravel trap, and into the tire barrier. Luckily, I'm only banged up a little.

  • I'm having trouble believing he was going 130mph when he hit that wall or even when he left the track.

If so he is the luckiest man on earth crashing like that with no HANS device in a LOCOST and walking away.

  • I was doing 130mph when I tried to start braking (6500rpm in 5th gear with 1994 Miata drivetrain), probably scrubbed off 30-40mph by the time I left the track, and was doing more like 60-70 when I actually hit the wall. I AM one of the luckiest, and WILL have a HANS device when I'm done building the next car. Thanks for looking.

  • Damn dude, where's the HANS!

  • @jackpot5283 HAHAHAHA

  • Not to make light of your near death experience (obviously I'm about to) but I hope the duck taped rear mirror isn't an indicator of how the brakes failed :P

  • so what was the damage to the car?

  • @3593893 This guys a friend of mine. The chassis was twisted a little. He striped the car and sold the chassis. He's working on building something else now.

And, despite how it looks it was going that fast when he tried to hit the brakes. After going off and sliding didn't hit the wall at 130, but was probably at least 50. The tires keep it from being a solid hit. The car had 230-250 at the wheels depending on how much boost and weighed about 1400lbs. Yes, it was fast.

  • @OSUCop That was probably a PDX or an open track day. Hence the lack of fire retardent clothing. China beach can be a nasty mistress. I've seen the aftermath of a 350Z losing its brakes at this turn, that driver wound up next to the ambulance, got out of his mangled wreck and walked right to the back doors.

  • I hate those stupid ass launchpads they have around the essess. That shit is going to get somebody fucking killed one of these days when a car goes off the track just right and digs into the sands and just flips endlessly.

  • woooo, scary ride! glad youre ok!

  • Man you got airborne for a second there ! Glad you where able to walk away bro ! How bad was the car ?

  • @jharry3: plus, even taking into account the slowing effect a camera has, it just doesn't look like 130, unless he means kilometers instead of miles.
