"Real Love" cover by Clint & Castille

Clint and I each did our own covers of this song in 2007. This time it's a collaboration, although I couldn't resist stealing Clint's original video for this project. "Real Love" is a song by John Lennon. He did six takes of the song in 1979 and 1980 with "Real Life", a different song that merged with "Real Love". Although I am personally rather partial to the original demo recording that John did, I also love the version that the remaining Beatles collaborated on. Originally, Lennon recorded the demos in the key of D. The Beatles version ended up in D# after the decision was made to speed the tape up by 12% for a faster tempo. Here we have dropped the key back down to Lennon's original, but the faster tempo remains. "Real Love" is the last "new" credited Beatles song to originate and be included on an album (Anthology 2). It reached #4 on the UK charts but would have likely made #1 if the song had been included on the BBC Radio 1 playlist. It was excluded from the list for not being "contemporary enough" for their listeners. Clint sings the lead vocal in what I think is one of his very best performances to date. In addition he is on rhythm guitar and the main lead. My contributions were: bass, drums, piano, a few lead licks, harpsichord, and harmony vocals. I'm blown away by how faithful your covers are. I never have the patience (or talent?) to recreate a song that exactly. Amazing.

I love this song by John. I also love the simplicity of the original demo, which I heard on the IMAGINE soundtrack many years ago. The "Beatles" also did it proud though!

I have to admit that the "later Lennon" did not appeal to me lyrically. Maybe I was reacting to his total surrender to fear after being hounded and spied upon by the FBI during his Rubin/Hoffman days, and this song speaks to his attitude about those "activitites" (similar to Rubin's later trajectory). Didn't support the radical then, didn't support the attitude later. But, politics aside, I love your work on this, with both of you showing mastery of this style (and, D minor is a fav of mine).
