everyone must experence a loss. everyone does. it was either dan gable losing in the oplymics or this match. he needed to get the loss out of his way. i believe that gable was the best wrestler to live. but dont get me wrong. i give plenty of respect to larry owings.

When he looks back on this in a interview he was saying that losing is something he needed to experience even though he wanted to win it really bad and he's right about tht
-
id like to see him do that again

@TheMattboi you have to believe in yourself before others will believe in you. That's how Dan Gable did it. That's how you need to do it too. Pessimism will get you nowhere :)

@Randohm Well, you are right of course. People want imperfect heroes, and never loosing makes it hard for people to relate to you.

@jimquantic Dan Gable did admit that the defeat made him better you can see it in this documentary at the 3:25 mark posted on youtube "Dan Gable 1972 Olympic Special" I think you can learn far more about a man by the way he takes his losses than you can by the way he takes his victories. I think that's the reason Dan Gable is more popular than Cael Sanderson. Cael Sanderson never had to deal with a defeat like Dan Gable's loss to Larry Owings.

You know, most people would want to have a career like Dan Gables, but I want to have a career like Owings.

@musicpirate08 Who isn't down to earth? I mean have you ever shook a man's hand and then looked down and he's hovering six feet off the ground?
-
@Randohm You are very correct. And I wonder if Coach Gable believes, today, that this loss--in time, made him even greater than he already was, or, if he still looks at the loss with anger. He is such a fighter, you got to wonder if he could buy into the "make me better" argument.

HAWKS
I was lucky enough to shake Larry Owings hand when he awarded the first place medals at the Canby Invitational Tournament in 1985 (his high school and mine)....ironically I was wearing a pair of Dan Gable wrestling shoes, which he pointed to and winked.

Larry Owings wrestled a great match against possibly the greatest opponent in the history of wrestling. He (Larry Owings) deserves great credit and a great spot in the history of wrestling because of it. If we don't honor Owings then we are not honoring Dan Gable either. Not just anyone could beat Dan Gable. Only a great wrestler who deserves great credit could do that.
