Coverage from ABC's 'Media Watch' covering one of the pettiest TV News squabbles ever seen - A court fight over the use of the word 'Leading'.

STW9 Claimed, rather cheekily; in Radio promo's that they were Perths "Leading hour of News and Current Affairs" - getting up the goat of TVW7 which had lead it in ratings for yonks. The matter ends up in the supreme court - the result is in the clip.

Also in this clip; coverage of 7's Big News revamp in 1999; in attempt to bolster dire ratings for stations ATN7 Sydney and HSV7.

Video Features:
- Richard Ackland (Host - Media Watch)
- Rick Ardon (TVW7)
- Tina Alteri (STW9)
- David Johnston, Anne Fulwood, David Brown (HSV7)
- Ross Symonds, Anne Sanders, Helen Wellings (ATN7)

  • media watch has improved... the second half of this is just cynical

  • Great.

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • Ditto.. thanks for uploading !!

7 eventually got it right in Sydney and Melbourne by returning to decent News event coverage and returning to different single Anchors.

But its still a highly competitive market and the viewers are still sampling both 9 and 7 on different nights.

10 certainly has had the right idea for nearly 2 decades now by going to air an hour earlier and capturing a different but very large market !!

  • seven news was also leading in brisbane and adelaide at the time. adelaide has been leading since the '90s.

  • This is a magnificent clip, that showed how Seven didn't really know much about news at all apart from in Perth.
