A hairy caterpillar of the bamboo lappet moth (Euthrix albomaculata directa, family Lasiocampidae) crawling on the surface of deep snow (4 deg C). Mid-January 2009 in Japan. It was approx. 18 mm long and blacker than the standard colouration (light brown; see the video response for instance). This species is known to overwinter in the larval stage. I've got the impression that more blackish larvae were often found in midwinter. I wonder if they are just a variant population or caused by a seasonal change for the overwinter survival. (melanized to absorb the scarce sunlight?) Other possibility is that maybe black ones are just different species, the reed lappet moth (Euthrix potatoria bergmani, family Lasiocampidae).
