I'm a fan of William Blake. And the Chimney Sweep is one of my favorites so I turned it into a song. Hope you like it.

William Blake (1757-1827)
The Chimney Sweeper

A little black thing among the snow,
Crying "weep! 'weep!" in notes of woe!
"Where are thy father and mother? say?"
"They are both gone up to the church to pray."

Because I was happy upon the heath,
And smil'd among the winter's snow,
They clothed me in the clothes of death,
And taught me to sing the notes of woe.

And because I am happy and dance and sing,
They think they have done me no injury,
And are gone to praise God and his Priest and King,
Who make up a heaven of our misery."

  • Greg Brown sings the words to this poem.

  • Hi, thanks for this, I've been wanting to do something with this poem, and maybe the other Blake Chimney Sweep poem... maybe to a trad Irish melody, to perform with my wee trad band... I like your melody, I will give it some listens and see if we can't give it a go... BTW, I've been a chimney sweep myself for 30 years now.

  • well done
