Strategy research has typically been dominated by economics-based approaches to firms and markets. In this lecture, Professor Jarzabkowski proposes a social theory of practice approach that focuses on the people who do strategy.

Drawing on her ethnographic studies in a range of settings from the third sector, to FTSE 100 companies and multinationals in the FMCG and financial services sectors, she explains what we can learn about strategy from watching what people actually do; what works, what doesn't and why?

Professor Jarzabkowski will also share some of her 'fly-on-the-wall' investigator experiences of using audio and video recorders to shadow people over time. Her conclusions will emphasize ethnography as a theoretically robust and practically valuable methodology for understanding the challenges of doing strategy in practice.
