Baritone, I understand but did they go back for their yearly checkups? Did the predecessor honor the elders in anyway or were they forgotten after they took what they wanted?
QuickSilver. Jason Dollarhide's predecessor said it was an honor that the University of Illinois had Chief Illiniwek and gave it the Peoria tribe's full support until he died in the 1990s.
A medicine man, unfortunately from the unrelated Sioux nation, gave the U of I the set of skins they've been using since late 80s or early 90s. So we've had some support from Native Americans.
North Dakota? has strong support of their local Native American nation and supports them with their programs. The all-powerful NCAA required them to drop their team emblem, too.
However Florida State pays money to the Seminole Tribe, who in turn give them permission. Somehow the NCAA allowed FSU to keep their mascot, who indeed launches a spear onto the field, even at visiting stadiums, but not the North Dakota mascot.
IDK. What I would like to know is how Black Americans would feel if a university had Zulu warriors as a mascot, or how Mexican Americans would feel if we had an Aztec mascot or a Bandito mascot, or how Asian Americans would feel if we had a mascot representing any historical Asian culture. Just food for thought.
The thing that gets me is that most people complaining are not even Native Americans. They are jerks that just want to destroy a good thing and like to be pests.
@Baritone45 because the mascot is a "leprechaun" and don't exist... unless leprechauns unite to protest notre dame is allowed to keep their mascot.
