Thousands of children cannot pee because their kidneys do not work. That means dialysis and then a transplant. But 70,000 people are waiting for a transplant! Research to find the cause and effective treatments for the debilitating diseases that cause kidney failure is the only way to end the suffering. The NephCure Foundation raises money to fund that research.
Some 700,000 people suffer from kidney failure and 20 million Americans are at increased risk because of chronic kidney disease.
FSGS is the second leading cause of kidney failure in children, with 5,000 new diagnoses every year. There is no cure and there are no effective treatments. Transplants are not the answer, because FSGS and Nephrotic Syndrome (NS) regularly attack new kidneys, sometimes within days.
For clinical research to succeed, we need to find the FSGS and NS families. Together with 15 University Hospitals, we have established a consortium to study these diseases, an undertaking that costs millions.
