The purpose of this clip is to show and hear the effects of fitting SSI equal length headers with M&K muffler on a 911 Carrera, its to help those who are thinking of replacing their exhaust system.
The car is 1984 3.2 Carrera with 60000 miles, 915 gearbox, 1160 kg.
Standard config. 231 BHP @ 5900rpm (DIN) 209 ft lbs, @ 4800 rpm, 98dB @ 75% max power revs
Current config. +ve: 250 BHP @ 6300 rpm(DIN), 218 ft lbs @ 5300 rpm, 216bhp /ton. Highway mpg was 27, now 30+.
-ve: trackday noise limit 105dB @ 75% max power revs, this config 105dB @ 4000 rpm, 500 rpm below the req'd spec.
Thanks to Greg Cranmer from Tognola Engineering in Datchet who fitted the SSI equal-length tuned headers and the M&K 2 in 1 out (2.5") muffler. Steve Wong of 911chips.com for mapping to 98 RON (for fuel availability reasons) though Shell Vpower 99 RON used on run and Rob, Kev & Jim at R Nicholson Motors of Crowle for their calibrated rolling road.
Sum-up,
+ve: noticeable increase in performance and better fuel consumption.
-ve: it is noiser than most UK trackday noise limits - I'm looking into ACT or Merlin Motorsport trackday silencers. The pre-74 heater pipes are retro-fitted making the electric fan redundant, the downside is that is you're in a traffic jam the heater ain't that effective.
On an incidental note, why the 915 box shouldn't be overlooked. The lighter 915 g/box means @ 1160kg its the same weight as the G50 g/box in the CS, but still retains comfy full trim as well as rust resistent underseal on thicker panel gauge. Double de-clutch heel and toe downshifts should be learnt to save and by-pass the 915's weak synchros, but it don't half sound nice with this exhaust config.
Sounds nice. what power did she make?

The power output is 250 bhp @ 6300 rpm, but the dyno guys reckoned it would top 255 - 256 if it would only stop jumping on the rollers.
Yours sounds like a Hayward & Scott custom - nice.

Sounds great! I'm just glad the straps held...

Not well enough. The sticky semi-slicks kept trying to ride over the front rollers and losing grip on the rear roller - messed the power readings.
