And now, rounding out my current batch of obsessions, I'm going to begin covering the individual characters of One Piece: Grand Adventure.
A note, I'm going to use the game's naming conventions in titles and headings, but where there's a piece of information that's different in the 4Kids version from a more accurate official translation that came since, I'll add that as well...and then I'll proceed to use the more official version in the description itself.

Monkey D. Luffy with Kung-Fu Jugons [Dugongs] vs.
Buggy the Clown with Beast Tamer Mohji and Ritchie the Lion
Roguetown [Loguetown] "An encircling net"
I find it strange that 4Kids even bothered to keep "the beginning and the end" if they didn't catch on to the proper spelling of the town's name. I mean, sure...pirates are rogues, but this isn't exactly a town full of them, as there's a major Marine base here, so it wouldn't be wise for them to do more than stop and stock up on supplies without making a big fuss before heading on to Reverse Mountain.
Oh well, enough about that...it's boggling, but it's not entirely damaging to the experience. Personally, I can't believe they went to the trouble of changing the little "Navy" signs on the barricades of the battlefield itself.
I find it funny that in the character select screen, the assist Buggy is using refers to Ritchie the Lion, but when Buggy summons him, he calls out for Mohji, his trainer...which...since both show up, neither would be technically inaccurate, it's just that the referral kinda flip-flops on you. It does make sense, though...I mean, if you want Ritchie to do something, which by all means, he's the one doing all the work, you ask Mohji to make sure he gets it done...obviously nobody but Mohji is going to give the lion any orders, right?
I'm...going to level with you right here and now...I don't like the way the AI is programmed for this game. It's got the worst possible aspects of a computer player that can make it "better" than a human: it knows exactly what move to use at what range and has instantaneous reflexes...which typically leads to the computer player deciding to spam whatever move is the "right" one given the current positioning between players.
The first casualty of this programming is that grabs are nearly (not completely) impossible against a high-level computer opponent. Seriously. You try executing an instantaneous move that requires you to be directly adjacent to your enemy, who just happens to be able to read the precise instant that conditions are right for performing one...and then grabs you before you could possibly have executed the throw you wanted to perform. If you try to preemptively press grab just as you're coming into range, that also probably won't work, because if you're not flush with your enemy, the grab will fail and you'll be open for the AI to show you its own.
Never fear, though...you'll get to see characters' grabs all right...you'll just end up seeing the character who's not the focus of the video performing them.
This also makes it spam support characters if it knows it can't hit you with anything it's got, leading to there almost always being a support character on the field, but I don't know...I guess sometimes it "forgets" by being tricked by its own coding into thinking there are higher priorities.
So the end result isn't unbeatable, because obviously it lacks the innate creativity of a human being...but the problem lies in the fact that it's just not fun to play against, and as such, it's rather difficult to give a truly expansive account and demonstration of each character's moves, because the AI will do its level best to thwart such attempts, because it already knows what you're doing and how best to stop it.
Luffy's Special Attacks in this game are the Gum Gum Hammer, Gum Gum Axe, and a combo attack that this game refers to as the Gum Gum Dance. Unfortunately, there was so much going on in these matches that Gum Gum Hammer got obscured somewhat in the confusion.
The Secret Attack seen here is initiated with Gum Gum Giant Scythe, and if you succeed, Luffy will perform his Gum Gum Storm...from within the catacombs of Alubarna...so...I guess they rebuild them every time he wants to warp himself and his opponent there, just so he can break it again?
As mentioned previously, Gum Gum Storm is Luffy's super-secret Secret Attack, which requires that you hold the special button while selecting him in order to replace his usual Gum Gum Scythe and Gum Gum Cannon Secret Attack sequence (as seen in the Tutorial video) with the one seen here.
I've decided that since each one is pretty neat to watch, I'm going to fail the first Secret Attack attempt for each character on purpose, so that you can see both outcomes...the rest were decidedly not by design, but I didn't think he'd keep picking Wisdom...
Oh, and in case there was any doubt...I'm really, REALLY bad at rock-paper-scissors...so that should be fun for everyone in each new video.

@Jazof123 I...actually can't make out what he's trying to say (assuming it's not just a particularly weird battle grunt) at 5:47 either, but 5:50 is him calling the name of the attack in use: Gum Gum Storm.

how do you get gum gum storm in vs mode (on the gamecube)
Kdude3196 2 months ago
@Kdude3196 You have to beat Crocodile in Alabasta on Luffy's Grand Adventure mode, and from that point on you can hold L while selecting Luffy to swap out his Gum Gum Cannon for Gum Gum Storm.

So? Wisdom beats Technique, Strength beats Wisdom, and Technique beats Strength. Is that correct?

@DrOctagonapus102 Yes, that's how it goes.
