Cindy Sherman is a photographer, one of the most recognised in her field. She mainly takes pictures of people -- portraits -- different characters. Her main model is herself. Therefore her works of art is self-portraits, at least by its pure traditional form. But as a self-portrait is also meant to be a representation of oneself, one could argue that Cindy Sherman is merely an actor portraying only the characters she puts on. A portrait of Harry Potter, would be just that a portrait of Harry Potter and not of Daniel Radcliffe right? And as Cindy Sherman has stated that they are not self-portraits, it is hard to argue for them to be so, as for it to be a self-portrait the artist must have intended for it to be so.
