I made this before the official proposal was posted.
Heres the full in detail:
The Hillsborough County School District recently decided to revoke the students privilege of exempting semester exams. This decision was based on concerns that the H1N1 virus would spread quickly throughout the school due to the current exemption standards. Our system is currently set up to try and encourage students to come to school at any cost, even if they are sick. This is flawed. Attendance is important, but not if it sacrifices the health of our classmates, our schools faculty, and ourselves. This is why we, the students of the Hillsborough County School District, have designed a new policy for exempting semester exams based on academic success. The terms of said policy are as follows:
1.To qualify for exempting any subjects exam, the student must first maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in the said subject for the two 9 week grading periods.
2.If the student is not in good standing with the Student Affairs Office, they shall not be eligible to exempt any exams.
3. The student shall not be able to exempt more than ½ of their subjects any one semester, rounded up, excluding seniors, who will be able to exempt up to all of their classes.
4.The student shall meet or exceed his/her current FCAT requirements.
This policy rewards students for hard work instead of punishing them for illness.
By giving students an incentive to study, they will put more effort into their academic achievements. Under the old policy, the only thing accomplished was to persuade students to stay in class; there was no reason for them to try to get anything higher than a C. By instituting a merit-based policy, not only will students be rewarded for good scholarship, they will also be less focused on absences, as missing only a few days will not jeopardize their grades, and teachers would assign makeup work. We believe that this policy rewards success and is necessary to better the student body.
