*Later that night, Brynn lay on the cold, hard bench of the hospital waiting room, waiting for her name to be called. When she and Joe had arrived at the walk-in clinic, they had examined her ankle and told her to go to the hospital, where the doctors there were authorized to finalize the diagnosis and put a cast on the injury. So, for the past two and a half hours, Brynn had been sleeping on the plastic bench generally intended for frantic mothers awaiting their children from surgery. She had her head in Joe's lap and he was stroking her hair softly. He had not left her side once that night, even when the doctors in the clinic had asked him to stay in the waiting room. He ignored them and helped Brynn sit on the examination table, holding her hand the entire time. When they were instructed to go to the hospital, he walked Brynn to Kevin's car and picked her up to keep her ankle from twisting as she got in. Now he was patiently waiting for the doctors to call her name and fix her ankle. He had not fallen asleep for even a minute, despite the lateness of the hour, but had been alert, listening for her name as she slept lightly.*
*Finally, as the clock above their heads chimed eleven, a nurse in green scrubs asked if "Brynn Lesce" was ready to come in. Shaking her gently to wake her up, Joe helps Brynn to the room indicated by the nurse, and sets her down on the waiting table. Brynn smiles and starts to thank him, but the nurse came in and immediately told Joe that he would have to leave. Joe persisted, but the nurse was obstinate, refusing to let Joe stay, saying that Brynn has to go for her x-rays alone before seeing the doctor. Brynn squeezes his hand and tells him that he could go. Smiling, he kisses her lightly on the cheek before turning and walking out into the waiting room once more.*
*About forty-five minutes later, the nurse in green scrubs sticks her head out of the door and nods to Joe that he is allowed in to see Brynn. He jumps up and practically sprints to the closed door of her room. After being warned by the nurse that Brynn might be asleep, he cautiously turns the handle and pushes open the door. Brynn is lying on a bed, awake but clearly very tired. She smiles as she sees who is at her door, and he walks in, sitting himself on the edge of the bed.*
JOE: Hey Brynn. How are you feeling?
BRYNN: To tell you the truth, I feel numb.
JOE: *Laughing and leaning in to kiss her forehead.* I'm just glad your ankle's okay. So did they tell you what the results are of the x-rays?
BRYNN: *Groaning.* Fractured ankle and ...um...ugh I don't remember the technical term, but apparently I tore a ligament too.
JOE: Do you have a cast?
BRYNN: *She lifts her leg out from under the thin blankets covering her, and shows Joe her plaster cast that covers her foot and runs halfway up her calf.* I'm gonna need crutches for three weeks, and then I have to come back and get a walking cast. Then another five weeks and I can take that off and put on a brace. Three more weeks after that and I'm free.
JOE: Ooh, well I suck at math, but I know that you have to wear that thing for a whole lotta weeks! *He smiles at her as she grimaces.* It wont be that bad. I'll help you with your crutches and stay home with you when everyone else goes to the beach. I assume the cast cant get wet?
BRYNN: *Groaning again.* No! Ugh that means I cant even go to the beach?
JOE: It's okay, I'll help you! I'll plan things for us to do while everyone else goes.
BRYNN: Don't be ridiculous! You'll want to go to the beach with them!
JOE: Not without you. What fun would that be?
