Fraunhofer IGD-98: With AR, the real world becomes the interface of humans to the computer. Users move real objects (play chips), the computer detects their new position with a camera and then plans and executes its own move, augmenting the scene with a new cross.
Work by G. Klinker, D. Stricker and D. Reiners - at the time at Fraunhofer IGD http://www.igd.fhg.de/igd-a4/

This is part of video that was shown by G. Klinker at the Siggraph'99 panel "Mixed Reality: Where Real and Virtual Worlds Meet", organized by Steve Feiner.
