Brittany Gibbons wants us to drastically change the way we think about women's bodies. Stripping down to her bathing suit onstage, she makes a passionate call for women of all body types to find confidence in each other.

TEDxBGSU - September 16th, 2011.

BRITTANY GIBBONS- WRITER & CEO, MOUTH MEDIA - WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT LIFE WHILE STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF TIMES SQUARE IN MY BATHING SUIT.

Brittany is a writer, humorist, and catalyst. She specializes in satirical wit and self deprecation, first gaining recognition writing the popular humor blog, Barefoot Foodie, in which she overshares bits of her life between phonetically spelled sound effects and excessive ellipses. In 2010, she added to her online resume by launching Mouth Media with her business partner, a company that houses the nationally recognized online magazine, Curvy Girl Guide, as well as several other big projects, with more being launched this year. She can also sometimes speak Italian and write her name with her left hand. You see, she's right handed. So, that's why that is a big deal.

  • @mainstreams I think you missed the point entirely. She isn't championing that being overweight (or underweight) is "healthy" or "preferred." She is simply saying that our weight doesn't define our self-worth, and I wholeheartedly agree (and for the record, I'm on the low end of normal for BMI, and I spent most of my life in the "underweight" category, hardly a "fat woman"). "Disgusting" shouldn't be in the vocabulary to describe ANY person. Brittany gets that. And she's beautiful for it.

  • @mainstreams You claim, among other presumably trollish things, that she does not look good. You are entitled to your opinion, but you are implying here that she does not possess the agency to classify herself as good looking, and that only you, or at least individuals who are not her or other fat women, are permitted to conclude such a thing. Thus, you are objectifying her and other fat women by implying that they must look outside of themselves for valid acceptance.

    Which is false.

  • America, its about time someone challenged the ridiculous mediocrity of your media industry that produces Kardishans & the like as role models for our daughters & ourselves.

  • @333laurie absolutely

  • @azeristarify totally agree

  • @mainstreams Agreed

  • I'm sorry but millions of people are dying because of obesity related health issues , Why is she promoting this ? Nothing wrong with being "curvy" or bigger if you are HEALTHY . Otherwise not an excuse to try to make it look cute .

  • sorry but this was not inspirational at all.

  • @servant4christ21 I didn't want to be mean or something... it is just pathetic how fat people try to convince everyone that we have to accept them... because they are LAZY to diet and exercise, so it is more simple to convince everyone that this is normal. EVERYONE can look good IF THEY WANT. If she doesn't want to diet, it's ok, but STFU. (btw BMI is a bullshit... it doesn't say how much fat you have on your body)

  • @mainstreams What is your operational definition of normal? Are you contrasting it with rare or classifying it as some kind of genetic anomaly? Because her size is very normal for humans.

Humans vary considerably in size and can tolerate healthily a great deal of fat. That does not mean that every individual can tolerate a particular fat percentage --- some need more than average, which is already a sizable range, and some need less. Childbearing women in particular can handle high fat %s.
