This beautiful, melodic art song was written in 1825 by Austrian composer Franz Schubert. He is considered by many to be one of the leading composers of German Lieder of the Early Romantic era. The German text is a prayer to Mother Mary pleading for safety and comfort. The original poetry was entitled Ellen's Song, and was from The Lady of the Lake, written by SIr Walter Scott.
