The Battle of Monte Cassino between 17 January 1944 and 18 May 1944 was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Second World War with heavy losses on both sides. It was fought by the Allies with the intention of breaking through the Winter Line and seizing Rome. One of the most important stratigic points of that defending line was the Monte Cassino, where the 1,300 years old abbey of St. Benedict stood on the top.
After American bombers had destroyed the abbey, the German Wehrmacht moved into the ruins and barricaded there for several months. After three months of bloddy fights the remaining German soldiers waved the white flag on the morning of May 18th.
The battle is also known as a battle of many nations, because of the lots of nations fighting for the Allies (what is alluded by the name "Union"). The most importand were the United Kingdom, the United States, the Free French Forces, the Polish Armed Forces in the West, Canada, British India and New Zealand.

CAUTION!
I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, Sabaton)

----------

  • @napoleon950 with saying that u unleashed the dislike rage there now 2

As a unit we stand and united we fall.....geil.

  • @Bigcal1292 I know, still it's weird. They released vast amoutns of bombs, knowing there was little chance to hit the enemy, and in the end they hit themselves.

  • @theodorosregmt Yea, that was the problem with bomb during ww2. We didn't have any of good way to drop bombs prosaically. It was more of a massive bomb drop and hoped you hit the enemy.

  • The funny thing with the battle of St. Benedict is that only a 20% of the Allied bombs hit the ACTUAL German troops, while the bombing of the monastery didn't kill anyone except monks and a 5-10% of the bombs hit the Allies themselves.(Thinking of the huge amounts of bombs dropped,a 5-10% is by no means a small number).

  • @PiscatorLager Ich glaube du hast "Winds of changing" geschrieben damit die deutsche Übersetzung besser passt bzw: leichter fällt.

I think you wrote "Winds of changing" because then the german translation fits better.
