Old railway cutting leading towards Partick Central Station. Exposed during redevelopment works in the West End of Glasgow. It was capped during the 1970's after the line had closed with a view to it reopening. It's now being filled in for good :-(

  • Were you lucky enough to do the Subway walk?

If so, did you shoot any video?

  • Yes I was one of the lucky ones to do the Subway walk and I took some video but it's not much to look at as it was too dark for the camera :-(

  • Yeah! Tesco want to build just the other side of this tunnel. Although they have submitted another application to build the superstore on South Street next to Glasgow Harbour which would be a far better location IMO

  • Just got this in the nick of time as it's been filled in

  • They will fill it in, re-develope with a new shopping centre or something and then decide that they need to improve the transport/rail network due to the roads being congested (or bring in a congestion charge) when they could have improved or re-opened existing rail links such as this one.

  • filling up old tunnels is a waste of concrete or explosives

  • Did anyone see the creeper

  • What magnificent building stone could do with a few tons of that

  • @martybhoy72 It says it closed in the 1970s, so probably not. Beeching himself resigned in 1965, but his closure programme carried on until the start of the 70s (though there were still some afterwards, such as the Woodhead route).

  • Reading some of the comments about the abadoned tunnels. Were they a result of Beeching?

  • This makes me want to go back and investigate the tunnels again! It was about 10 years ago that some friends and I walked from the Kelvin River entrance at Botanic Gardens, through the station and all the way to the SECC station exit. Fun days, and I've been told it's padlocked a lot more securely now :-(

We did the same in the tunnel under Yorkhill up to the end of it. Made all the more fun when all the torches ran out of power at the deepest end!

  • in the old kelvin bridge subway tunnel on the kelvin walkway now covered by huge iron doors my friends an i found a dead body, a guy had his head beaten in with a brick. we found him on the way home from glasgow academy in 1980. True.

  • It's like Fallout 3...

  • That sounds like the Kelvingrove tunnel, which funnily enough runs under Kelvingrove Park :-)
